Up the Elephant and Round the Castle was a swaggering ‘80s sitcom that starred Jim Davidson, Sue Nicholls and John Bardon. Sue Nicholls played vampish Wanda Pickles whose husband is banged up in maximum security and who is always trying to storm Jim’s castle. Nicholls is best known today for her long-running role as Audrey Roberts in Coronation Street, but has had a long and successful career on British television. She first became known playing Marilyn Gates on Crossroads from 1964 to 1968, and then found later fame as Reginald Perrin’s secretary and lust-object in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. And let it never be forgotten that she played Nadia Popov in the immortal Rentaghost. Her real-life husband is Mark Eden, best known as Corrie’s evil Alan Bradley.
