Love Thy Neighbour - Series 5 - Ep2

It’s quite a shock for Joan and Eddie Booth when Barbie and Bill Reynolds move in as their next-door neighbours. Eddie hadn’t even realised he was a racist until he had to live next door to a black couple. This British sitcom was hugely popular in the 1970s, an era when Britain struggled to come to terms with an influx of black immigrants. The views of Eddie Booth were deliberately presented to make him appear stupid and bigoted and were contrasted with the more tolerant attitude of his wife. Love Thy Neighbour starred Jack Smethurst, Rudolph Walker, Nina Baden-Semper and Kate Williams. Eddie takes charge of a crate of bananas, a present for Bill from Trinidad. He soon wishes he hadn’t when, to his horror, he discovers that there are more than mere bananas in the crate. Eddie, to Bill’s delight, turns very white indeed!
