Love Thy Neighbour - Series 4 - Ep5

This British sitcom was hugely popular in the 1970s, an era when Britain struggled to come to terms with its recently arrived population of black immigrants. The views of Eddie Booth were deliberately presented to make him appear stupid and bigoted and were in contrast with the more tolerant attitude of his wife. This sitcom was certainly bold in its depiction of racism and it’s worth noting how much attitudes have changed in the 30 years since this show was written. This episode, racial divides are forgotten as both Eddie and his West Indian neighbour Bill head for the antenatal clinic. The trip typically results in chaos with Bill losing his temper and bets being made. Love Thy Neighbour starred Jack Smethurst, Rudolph Walker, Nina Baden-Semper and Kate Williams.
