Blood Diamond

Hollywood has a rare conscience attack with this tale of the trade in “blood diamonds", and their role in sustaining genocidal wars. It’s 1999 and civil war is tearing Sierra Leone apart. When an armed militia attacks his village, fisherman Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) is spared mutilation only to be kept as a slave, digging for diamonds that will in turn be sold to buy weapons. With his wife and children in a refugee camp and his son forced to become a child soldier, Solomon’s unlikely guardian angel becomes Danny (Leonardo DiCaprio), an amoral South African mercenary turned diamond smuggler. With American journalist Maddy (Jennifer Connelly) sensing a great story, Danny agrees to agrees to reunite Solomon’s family in return for the giant diamond Solomon has hidden deep within rebel territory.
