Setting box-office records when it was released in 1989, Batman is a brooding take on the vigilante superhero. Directed by Tim Burton, Batman stars Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger. Millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne spends his evenings disguised as Batman fighting crime in Gotham City, a course that was set when he witnessed his parents being killed by a mugger. This brings him into conflict with a deformed psychopath known as the Joker who has taken over Gotham City’s underworld. Meanwhile, reporter Vicki Vale is on the trail of a mysterious vigilante and has fallen for Bruce Wayne without realising who he really is. Batman is shocked by the news that the Joker is the man who killed his parents. Can he foil the madman’s plans to gas Gotham’s unsuspecting citizens?
